The striker missed Saturday’s victory over Liverpool and won’t recover in time for the club’s first Champions League group stage game on Tuesday
Manchester United have confirmed that Wayne Rooney has not travelled with the squad for their first Champions League group-stage fixture against PSV on Tuesday.
The striker suffered a hamstring injury during training last week and missed United’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday as a result.
After the game manager Louis van Gaal said it was unlikely his captain would recover in time for their trip to Holland, and highlighted the importance of not risking him given his side’s relative lack of striking options.
Marouane Fellaini started up front in Rooney’s absence against the Reds and is likely to do so again against PSV. Youngsters James Wilson and Andreas Pereira have also been added to the squad.
