Premier League Team of the Week: Mata, Rooney & Suarez all feature

On the weekend that Jose Mourinho declared Chelsea were out of the title race, Liverpool took another large step towards winning it themselves.

Brendan Rodgers’s side took Tottenham apart for the second time this season as goals from Luis Suarez, Coutinho and Jordan Henderson helped secure a 4-0 win, while the Blues were beaten 1-0 at struggling Crystal Palace.

But first stop for Goal‘s Team of the Week is the Britannia Stadium where Asmir Begovic (3.5) pulled off a string of fine saves to ensure he kept a clean sheet in Stoke’s narrow 1-0 win over Hull City.

Calum Chambers (4) continues to earn rave reviews for his performances at right-back for Southampton and the young defender was at it again in his side’s hammering of Newcastle, providing a constant outlet going forward without shirking his defensive responsibilities.

He may well face a tougher test against Arjen Robben on Tuesday night but Alexander Buttner‘s (4) performance against Aston Villa sees him earn a place in defence and he’s joined by Joel Ward (3.5) for his solid showing in helping keep Chelsea out at Selhurst Park.

There was plenty of competition for a midfield place but there was certainly no stopping Adam Lallana (4.5) from earning a place.

The Southampton playmaker was at his brilliant best as he created one goal and scored a belter from distance himself as his side made light work of Alan Pardew’s Newcastle on Saturday.

Juan Mata (4.5) gets the nod after opening his account for Manchester United in the 4-1 win over Aston Villa, while Jonathan de Guzman (4), who struck twice for Swansea as they comfortably beat Norwich, also earns a place.

The standout performer in Liverpool’s demolition of Tottenham completes our midfield, with Raheem Sterling (4.5) causing all sorts of problems for Danny Rose and the rest of the Spurs back four in a hugely impressive outing at Anfield.

In attack is Jay Rodriguez (4.5), who struck twice for Southampton on the weekend to further increase his chances of making Roy Hodgson’s England squad, while Suarez (4.5) and Wayne Rooney (4.5) are involved yet again with both players also on the scoresheet against Tottenham and Aston Villa respectively.
