How Fellaini overcame ‘worst’ season

“I knew my team-mates. I knew the club, I knew how to work with this situation and I think, for the last four-and-a-half years, I did a good job.

“I would never criticise David Moyes because he gave me my chance in England: I played under him nearly every game [at Everton].

“When Van Gaal arrived, it was a new change. He didn’t know English football, he didn’t know certain players and he didn’t know me too.

“I had to train harder to prove to him that he could count on me and that’s what I did. When he arrived, he said to me: ‘I don’t count on you. You are my third, fourth, fifth choice’ and I said to him: ‘No problem, I’ll get training.

“In my head, I was saying: ‘Let’s train and we will see in the end what happens.’ After that, [within] one week, 10 days, maximum two weeks, I started to play.”

A chance for Forson and Kambwala to reflect

“It’s a really important moment in anyone’s career, their debut and, to debut at this club, is kind of extra special,” said Cox.

“It is really hard thing to do but, as you probably heard from what I said to the boys, as much as we are celebrating this landmark, they know there is a lot to do moving forwards.

“They will both have their own ambitions of making those next little landmarks in the journeys, whether that is 10 games, 20 games or being in the starting XI on a regular basis.

“So they have a lot of work to do, but it is important that we stop and mark the occasion and celebrate.”

Watson optimistic about comeback

“But now I’m in the process, I have had time to reflect and just think about it all. You do think, ‘Yeah, it’s a big injury.’ It’s obviously one of your biggest fears.

“But I think now I’m at a stage where it’s just football, it’s life, injuries are a part of the sport. I probably will have more injuries, hopefully never as severe as this, but it’s just a learning experience and something that I’m going to grow from.”

Which Reds are playing in Tuesday’s internationals?

Meanwhile, England take on Belgium at Wembley, with Kobbie Mainoo hoping to earn his second senior cap after an assured display off the bench against Brazil. Marcus Rashford will also be pushing for a start.

Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund are set to be involved when Denmark face Faroe Islands in Brondby, as coach Kasper Hjulmand’s men look to get on the scoresheet after a 0-0 draw with Switzerland at the weekend.

United youngster James Scanlon may get another run-out for Gibraltar, after making his senior bow in the 1-0 defeat to Lithuania. The same opponents are up next in Vilnius and these matches are in the UEFA Nations League.

Further afield, Sofyan Amrabat is preparing for Morocco’s game against Mauritania, Facundo Pellistri‘s Uruguay take on Ivory Coast and, overnight, Alejandro Garnacho will hope to start against Costa Rica, after coming on as a substitute in Argentina’s 3-0 win over El Salvador.
