The 19-year-old has attracted the attention of top clubs across Europe, but the club legend wants the youngster to prove himself in the Pro League before a move away
Anderlecht icon Paul van Himst has urged Youri Tielemans to stay put at the club and shun the allure of a move to Manchester United and the Premier League.
Tielemans has started the new season in impressive form, scoring three goals in seven Jupiler Pro League appearances to help lift Besnik Hasi’s side up to third in the table.
His form has led to strong speculation that Europe’s elite sides are lining up to sign the talented Belgian attacker, with Goal understanding Louis van Gaal’s outfit are leading the chase for the 19-year-old but having to fight off competition from title rivals Chelsea.
However, Van Himst believes the youngster still has goals to accomplish in his homeland before considering a move away.
“Tielemans first has to become Anderlecht’s star performer and win the Golden Shoe [awarded to the Pro League’s best player] to be ready for [a transfer] abroad,” the club legend, who played for the Brussels club before becoming their manager, told Voetbalkrant.
Even then, Van Himst doesn’t believe being named as the league’s star performer would necessary prepare Tielemans for a high-profile switch, but the 72-year-old argues that at least would be assurance of some consistency.
“It would prove that he has played a full year at a high level,” the three-time award winner added. “And that’s what I’m waiting for from Tielemans”.
The caution stems from Memphis Depay’s ill-fated start at Old Trafford this season, with the youngster failing to make an impact in the Premier League despite finishing Eredivisie top-scorer with PSV Eindhoven last term.
