With Manchester City cruising to the title and Burnley finishing with Europa League football for next season, this Premier League campaign has been filled with record-breaking feats and the most incredible fairy tales.
Where would Liverpool be without Salah’s 32 goals? And what if Kane had left for Real Madrid? Let’s take a look at the players to win the most Premier League points for their sides with their goals this season…
5. Raheem Sterling – 11 Points
Leroy Sane won PFA Young Player of the Year, Kevin de Bruyne finished second for PFA Player of the Year, and Sergio Aguero scored the most goals. However, statistically, nobody was more important to Manchester City’s Premier League dominance than Raheem Sterling.
He’s undoubtedly the most improved player in English football this season, and Pep Guardiola has turned the ex-Liverpool man into a goalscoring machine.
Sterling has proved vital throughout City’s season, netting a 96th minute winner against Southampton, a 98th minute winner against Bournemouth, an 82nd minute equaliser against Everton and an 88th minute winner against Huddersfield.
But even if Sterling’s 18 goals and 11 retrieved points where eradicated, City would still have won the title by eight points anyway, and that tells you all you need to know about just how good Guardiola’s men were this season.
£49m for the Englishman has turned out to be a bit of a steal.
4. Romelu Lukaku – 11 Points
Most Manchester United fans are ending the season feeling disappointed and annoyed, as their neighbours won the league, and they lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea.
However, without Romelu Lukaku, it is hard to imagine United even reaching the final, or finishing runners up to City.
Old Trafford has been begging for a long-term, world class number nine for a while. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robin van Persie worked for a season each, but they were never going to be there for the long-term. But with Lukaku, they have their man.
It may have been a trophy-less season for United, and the football they have played has been dull and negative to say the least, but without Lukaku they wouldn’t even have got Champions League football for next season.
Mourinho’s men have finally acquired the man they wanted and needed. Time will tell if Lukaku will stay for the long-term, but if they play their cards right, United will have a prolific striker for years to come, and his importance is already showing.
3. Chris Wood – 12 Points
Other players on this list may have scored more goals and retrieved their sides more points, but in terms of sheer importance, not many have been as important for their side than Chris Wood – simply based on the fact that Burnley finished seventh, when many predicted they would fight relegation.
Sean Dyche’s side haven’t played the most beautiful football this year, but with the likes of Wood they have managed to conjure up goals from very little.
Wood seems to fit Burnley’s style exceptionally well, which hands further credit to Dyche. His tall stature and physicality make up for what he lacks technically, and his goals have earned Burnley 12 points.
Minus these 12 points from Burnley’s 54 and they would have finished 12th, just ahead of West Ham on goal difference.
It’s been an astonishing season for the Lancashire outfit in every aspect, with Burnley set to play Europa League football next season, but without Wood, European qualification would have remained a feat Burnley could achieve in the realms of Football Manager.
2. Mohamed Salah – 16 Points
It’s little surprise to see the little Egyptian on the list.
Mohamed Salah has endured the most astonishing season Premier League football has ever seen, scoring 32 goals and breaking the record of 31 goals in a Premier League season set by Alan Shearer, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Salah’s left foot is pure magic, and will cause nightmares for any defender he faces, just as he has done all season long in England, and if he scores the winner in the Champions League final, he surely gets the Ballon d’Or as well.
This one is fairly simple; without Salah, Liverpool wouldn’t be going to Kiev, and Jurgen Klopp’s men would have finished about seventh.
Only time will tell if he’s a famous ‘one season wonder’, but for now Salah has written himself into the history books and almost single handily secured fourth spot for Liverpool in the Premier League with his ridiculously good season.
1. Harry Kane – 22 Points
Another addition to this list that comes as little surprise. Harry Kane has been the most consistent goalscorer the Premier League has seen since the days of Thierry Henry, with this season being his most prolific to date with 30 strikes.
If it wasn’t for Salah’s utter brilliance, Kane would have secured his third consecutive Golden Boot, and because of Salah’s 32 goal-haul, Kane has not received the plaudits he deserves.
Without Kane’s goals, Spurs would have dropped 22 points, which would have put them in seventh, two points behind Arsenal. So much for a one season wonder, right?
The lure of Real Madrid will surely tempt the Englishman eventually, and if he leaves Spurs can kiss goodbye to Champions League football in the future. Kane is their main man, and by far the Premier League’s most important player for his side.
