Manchester United hijacked PSG deal to sign Depay

The Ligue 1 side had already agreed a fee for the winger, only for United to step up their interest and beat the club to his signature

PSV have revealed Manchester United hijacked Paris Saint-Germain’s bid for Memphis Depay after stepping up their interest and sealing a deal in the last 48 hours.

The Eredivisie club’s sporting director, Marcel Brands, says the Ligue 1 club had already agreed a fee to sign the winger before Christmas, only for United to respond with a move of their own.

The 21-year-old ultimately picked Louis van Gaal’s side and will move to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens in July, subject to a medical.

“PSG were already very serious for Memphis before the winter break,” Brands told Omroep Brabant. “We had reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain and I’d have said he would be joining PSG had you asked me about his next destination two days ago.

“Only in the last 48 hours did Manchester United step up their interest and things went very fast from there on. In the end, the player decides where he wants to go and he wanted Manchester.”

Both United and PSV confirmed earlier on Thursday that they had agreed a €27.5 million deal for Depay, who has scored 21 goals in 28 Eredivisie games this season, leading his club to the title.

The youngster had earlier revealed in an interview with his agency, SEG, that a number of clubs were in the running for his signature.

“It was an exciting and pretty hectic period, and to have a choice between so many top clubs doesn’t make it any easier. For me, Manchester United is an absolute dream club, so I didn’t need any convincing of the guys who already play at Manchester United.

“They told me only positive things though, and I’m looking forward to playing with my Dutch team-mates next to all the other great players of Manchester United. And working with manager Louis van Gaal again is also a big bonus.

“Yes [a lot of clubs were interested in me]. In the end it was just a matter of feeling, not a matter of money.”
