Old Trafford return was hard, admits Welbeck

The Manchester United academy graduate was sold to the Gunners late last summer and says that coming back in an opposition shirt in the FA Cup on Monday was tough

Danny Welbeck has admitted that he found it “hard” on his return to Old Trafford as his goal for Arsenal clinched a win over Manchester United in the FA Cup on Monday.

Welbeck pounced on Antonio Valencia’s weak back-pass, rounded David de Gea and scored to give the Gunners a 2-1 win and a place in the semi-finals.

The England international joined the north Londoners on deadline day in September last year after coming through the United youth system and was pleased to be welcomed back by the home fans.

“It was a great reception,” Welbeck told Arsenal’s official website.

“It was hard for me but I tried to be respectful.”

The 24-year-old did not hold back his celebrations after the goal but he says that he was just happy to have helped Arsenal book a place in the last four.

“It was about being professional, keeping my focus and motivation,” the striker remarked. “I kept plugging away and then got on the end of Antonio Valencia’s back-pass, beat David de Gea and got the winning goal.

“I’m just really pleased we’re through to the next round.”
