Blind: No time to play the ball around in the Premier League

The former Ajax midfielder says that players do not get a chance to take a breather because of the incredibly high tempo of English football

Manchester United midfielder Daley Blind has admitted he has been surprised by the pace of the game in the Premier League, claiming that there is “have a rest” or “play the ball around”.

The Netherlands international joined the Red Devils from Ajax on deadline day last summer for a fee of €19 million and has gone on to make 17 appearances so far this season.

However, Blind says it took him some time to adjust to the speed of the English game.

“The biggest difference is the Premier League is played at a much higher tempo,” he told Inside United.

“In Holland, you have some points in a game when you can say, ‘Okay, let’s have a rest for a few minutes and play the ball around!’

“When I played my first games here, I noticed the difference and was a little tired! The tempo is definitely much higher here.”

Blind has chipped in with important goals to salvage draws against West Brom and West Ham but concedes he is not renowned for his goalscoring abilities.

“I remember we were 2-1 behind [against West Brom]. I’d tried a few shots on goal before that but they had been blocked,” he added.

“I just decided to go again when the ball rolled into me and I tried to place it in the goal. I was very happy to see it go in.

“I’m not really working on scoring so much but I can definitely work on it more! Normally I’m a passing player and I think that’s why for my first goal I tried to pass it into the net.”

Blind also heaped praise on United boss Louis van Gaal, who he says will allow external criticism to change the way in which he goes about his job or sends his sides out to play the game.

“I really admire that he’s always himself,” he explained. “He’s always really honest to everyone about his ideas and what he wants.

“I think that’s a good thing in a person because you know where you stand as a player. That’s what I really admire about him.”
