Van Gaal: Coach of the Year? Look at Manchester United's results!

The Dutchman has expressed his surprise at being part of the 10-man shortlist for the Fifa award having steered his side to just four wins at the start of the 2014-15 campaign

Louis van Gaal has expressed his surprise at being nominated for the Fifa Coach of the Year award given his indifferent start to life as Manchester United boss.

United currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League table and have only won four games out of a possible 11, with Van Gaal frequently expressing concerns over the balance of his side.

But despite the Red Devils’ struggles in the 2014-15 campaign, the former Netherlands coach has still been named as part of a 10-man shortlist for Fifa’s World Coach of the Year award, a decision he finds difficult to comprehend.

“When you see the results of Manchester United it is unbelievable that I’m on the Coach of the Year shortlist,” he told MUTV.

Van Gaal was also asked his opinion on who should win the Ballon d’Or and, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi predictably the two front-runners, but the Dutchman instead hopes that a German World Cup winner claims the award.
