'I knew nothing about him' – Queiroz denies recommending Bebe to Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson claims he spoke to his former assistant, who was then the Portugal boss, prior to the 24-year-old’s €9m move to Old Trafford

Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz insists he played no part in the €9 million deal that brought Bebe to Old Trafford.

Bebe joined from Vitoria de Guimaraes but Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he had never seen the forward in action and revealed the transfer was based solely on scout reports and a conversation with Queiroz.

The 24-year-old made just two first-team appearances for United before moving to Benfica for €3m in July and Queiroz, who was Portugal’s head coach at the time of Bebe’s move in 2010, maintains he “knew nothing” about the striker.

“Bebe was not even part of our scouting files for the national team of Portugal,” Queiroz told FourFourTwo magazine.

“He didn’t exist in a system where nothing escaped us. So Bebe going to Man United took me by surprise.

“I called my coaches and asked them what was going on, why he didn’t exist. I knew nothing about him.”
