Sir Alex Ferguson sets 25-goal targets for Rooney, Van Persie and Chicharito

The Manchester United manager believes each of his main three forwards are capable of hitting 25 goals before the end of the season as they go on the hunt for silverware

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident that Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Chicharito can all hit the 25-goal target that he has set them for this season.

Ahead of their clash against Everton on Sunday, the 71-year-old Scot stated his belief that, if his three marksmen were to hit that target, they would be well-placed to win silverware.

The Red Devils have had no problems scoring goals this season as their potent strikeforce have helped United become the highest scorers in the league, garnering 60 goals in 25 games.

Van Persie, Rooney and Chicharito have contributed heavily to that, amassing 39 goals altogether, and their manager is confident that they can hit their set targets, thus propelling them to glory as the season draws to a close.

“If I can get all our three strikers on 25 goals this season then that will get us in the ball-park for honours. The way they are going, the signs are good,” he told reporters.

“Wayne is on 13, Javier Hernandez has 14 and Robin van Persie is already on 22. We have 13 Premier League games and, hopefully, another half-dozen cup games as well, so there’s plenty of time for them to reach their targets.”

Sir Alex also spoke of his confidence in Rooney ahead of Sunday’s match against the striker’s former club, deeming him capable of dealing with the “stick” thrown his way against the Toffees.

“When Wayne first went back to Goodison, the crowd gave him a lot of stick, and maybe it did affect him,” he continued.

“He’s missed a couple of games at Everton through injury, but he scored against them last season. So I don’t think it’s a problem for him any more, particularly at Old Trafford.”
