'He’s been doing that for years' – Rooney hails England match-winner Lampard

The Chelsea man hit a superb strike in off the post to grab victory for Roy Hodgson’s side and the striker was glad they came back from conceding a “silly goal” to go on and win

Wayne Rooney has praised Frank Lampard’s match-winning cameo against Brazil, claiming the Chelsea star “has been doing it for years”.

The 27-year-old set up the Chelsea midfielder’s sublime second-half volley, which proved the difference after Fred had cancelled out Rooney’s opener.

Roy Hodgson’s men picked up a 2-1 Wembley win – their first over Brazil since 1990 – and Rooney admitted the goal was a product of instinct.

“I just anticipated the pass and just managed to get there before the defender and lay it on for Frank,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s a great finish by Frank; it stuck under his feet but he’s been doing that for years, he’s a fantastic player.”

Then England and Manchester United striker was, however, disappointed that his side let Brazil back in the game after a mix-up in defence involving Gary Cahill.

“It was a silly goal to give away and it could have cost us the victory,” he added.

“But to come back and get the win was great for us; [before] we might have folded and not gone on to win the game, and maybe gone on to lose it.

“It’s great [to win]. Obviously Brazil are a fantastic team and it was tough tonight, but the main thing was that we played well. At times we fought and worked hard and got the win.”
