Despite being 12 points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, the Argentine insists his team are still in with a chance of winning the Premier League
Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero believes his side can still win the Premier League title despite sitting 12 points behind Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are in pole position ahead of the season run-in with 11 games remaining but the Argentine insists it would be wrong to write off Roberto Mancini’s side and claims his team-mates will “fight to the end”.
“Can we still win the title? I’d like to believe so,” Aguero told reporters.
“We can’t give up, even though it looks tough. I’d still rather think we can and we’ll fight to the end, I can guarantee that.
“It’s been the same mindset since the beginning of the season – play the game with all we’ve got to reach our biggest goals.
“Of course, the current circumstances mean it is not as simple as that, but it is our duty, as defending champions, to leave all we’ve got out on the field. There’s not a thought in our heads other than winning the match we are playing.”
City’s inconsistent form has hampered their bid to keep pace with United this season, but Aguero insists his side are still gaining experience from each game and continue to improve, despite being behind their title rivals.
“I’ve been taught that a gradual process must be respected and that both victories and defeats have something to teach us as a team and as individuals,” Aguero said.
“With experience, we will be able to grow even more year by year and whatever happens this season, we will learn from it and use it to our advantage.
“I think that we get stronger every year. This is one of the most competitive leagues in the world, if not the most competitive and we’re keeping a very high profile. That’s nothing to scoff at.”
