|Real Madrid||3-0||Borussia Dortmund|
|Real Sociedad||0-4||Real Madrid|
With each passing week the €100 million noose around the neck of Gareth Bale loosens a knot and twice in the space of the last seven days the winger has demonstrated his growing stature.
The 24-year-old was at his brilliant best in the 3-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund and then stepped up to the plate in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday to keep Madrid in the hunt for La Liga.
Goal Miguel Churruca said: “It was a key week for Real Madrid not only in their Champions League challenge but also in the race ahead La Liga title, where los Blancos are still three points behind Atletico Madrid despite their huge win last Saturday in San Sebastian.
“Gareth Bale proved to be a determinant player with or without Ronaldo on the pitch. The Welshman made it 1-0 in the third minute of the Champions League clash against Dortmund in the first leg of the quarter-final knockout. He also made several stunning moves across the field and ended the game with a standing ovation from Madrid supporters.
“The former Tottenham player took the leading role in Anoeta, where Ronaldo was absent through injury. Bale made it 2-0 when he took advantage of Real Sociedad keeper Claudio Bravo’s stray throw and lashed home from 20 yards and led the fight as his side ran out 4-0 winners.”
