Chelsea are plotting a summer offer for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to reports.

Kepa has struggled for consistency during his second season at Stamford Bridge, with Frank Lampard dropping the £70m man in February following a particularly patchy run of form.

He has since been reinstated in the Chelsea starting XI, but saw his performance criticised once more on Tuesday for his part in Wilfried Zaha’s goal during the Blues’ 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace.

According to Football Insider, Lampard is eager to sign a new goalkeeper during the transfer window and the club are targeting Manchester United’s Henderson.

The report states that the Blues are prepared to spend lavishly on a new number one, and are hoping to tempt Henderson to Stamford Bridge with the allure of being a first choice goalkeeper for a Champions League quality side.

However, Chelsea will only splash out on the 23-year-old if they can first find a buyer for Kepa.

Henderson has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, helping the Blades gain promotion from the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign, and emerging as a key figure during their unlikely assault on the European places this season.

His performances earned him a maiden senior international call up in October 2019, with many tipping him to replace Jordan Pickford as England’s number one ahead of the 2021 European Championships.

The former Shrewsbury man signed a new Manchester United deal in 2019 to keep him at Old Trafford until 2022, but, as reported by 90min, the Red Devils are keen to extend his contract in a show of long-term faith in the Englishman.

However, in June it was reported that Henderson was only prepared to put pen to paper on a new deal at United if he is promised the number one spot – with David de Gea currently standing in his way.
