How Garnacho was inspired by Ten Hag’s speech

ANYWAY, ANYHOW, ANYWHERE

Perhaps Garnacho’s most beloved trait, as far as United fans are concerned, is his willingness. A willingness to play anywhere, to attack whenever possible, to keep on going as long as the game is live. The aforementioned Aston Villa game saw Garnacho switch to the right flank – a position he was unfamiliar with – to allow Marcus Rashford to revert to his favoured left. And he made it look ridiculously easy. Since then, his fluency from that position has given Ten Hag greater tactical flexibility, and underlined Garnacho’s growing maturity and a hunger to affect the game whatever role he is given.

FIRST ARGENTINA START

We conclude with Tuesday night’s milestone. Being selected for international duty is always a proud moment for a young player – Kobbie Mainoo earned his own first start for England on the same night – but let’s not forget that Argentina are world champions. Making their starting XI is about as tough as it gets. Alongside Garna in the starting line-up in LA were Chelsea mega-buy Enzo Fernandez, Liverpool fulcrum Alexis Mac Allister, plus former Real Madrid, PSG and United winger Angel Di Maria and Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez.

It’s been a superb ride for Garnacho thus far in 2023/24 – let’s hope there are a few more moments to savour before the season reaches its conclusion.

United and Liverpool Foundations join forces to combat tragedy chanting

John Shiels, CEO of Manchester United Foundation, added: “It is unacceptable to use the loss of life, in relation to any tragedy, to score points, and it is time for it to stop. We are proud to come together with LFC Foundation as we believe education will break the generational cycle on this issue and help thousands of young people across this region understand the impact tragedy-related abuse has.”

Matt Parish, CEO of LFC Foundation, said: “This is a hugely important event which both clubs are committed to making happen every year. Our two proud Foundations coming together to show young people, and all others, how we stand united against tragedy chanting is a very powerful message. Education is key, alongside appropriate action, to eradicating vile tragedy chanting in all its forms forever, and we’re delighted to be able do our bit to help.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who travelled to Germany last year to be part of the memorial service marking the 65th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, has also been a pivotal figure in the campaign for truth and justice for Hillsborough families alongside Liverpool City Region Mayor, Steve Rotheram.

Onana picks his best-ever keeper

“Well, who has inspired me the most?” he told Inside United. “That is a very good question because, being a goalkeeper and especially trying to be a modern goalkeeper, you have to look to a lot of goalkeepers. If I had to choose one who made me think different, I would say Manuel Neuer.

“Why? Because of his way, the way he plays. At the World Cup in 2014, I remember, when they won in Brazil. When I was watching that World Cup, I found someone I wanted to look like, he made me think differently.

“Obviously, before him, I was still in the Academy but I had a lot of goalkeepers I was looking up to and who I was thinking of. But, if I have to choose one, I would say Neuer. He made me think differently.”

How Fellaini overcame ‘worst’ season

“I knew my team-mates. I knew the club, I knew how to work with this situation and I think, for the last four-and-a-half years, I did a good job.

“I would never criticise David Moyes because he gave me my chance in England: I played under him nearly every game [at Everton].

“When Van Gaal arrived, it was a new change. He didn’t know English football, he didn’t know certain players and he didn’t know me too.

“I had to train harder to prove to him that he could count on me and that’s what I did. When he arrived, he said to me: ‘I don’t count on you. You are my third, fourth, fifth choice’ and I said to him: ‘No problem, I’ll get training.

“In my head, I was saying: ‘Let’s train and we will see in the end what happens.’ After that, [within] one week, 10 days, maximum two weeks, I started to play.”

A chance for Forson and Kambwala to reflect

“It’s a really important moment in anyone’s career, their debut and, to debut at this club, is kind of extra special,” said Cox.

“It is really hard thing to do but, as you probably heard from what I said to the boys, as much as we are celebrating this landmark, they know there is a lot to do moving forwards.

“They will both have their own ambitions of making those next little landmarks in the journeys, whether that is 10 games, 20 games or being in the starting XI on a regular basis.

“So they have a lot of work to do, but it is important that we stop and mark the occasion and celebrate.”
